How can cold email work for consultants to get clients?

Cold email works fantastic for consultants. If you run a software development, no-code development, or AI automation agency, you are essentially a consultant. I regularly pitch people in the AI and automation vertical to use cold email to get clients, and I use it myself to get my own clients. The same system that works for you will work for any other consultant. You don't need to worry about whether it works for consultants—it does. Proof is in the pudding: if you're using the system to acquire clients, then by definition it's working. Additionally, you can explore niche packs inside Maker School and other systems you could sell, such as unique repurposing content creators, trend detectors, YouTube comment ideators, and tools like Vid IQ that help find liars for inbound flows. There are also YouTube-specific tools for long-form content creators. In short, cold email is great for consultants, coaches, and similar professionals.

Hey Nick, what are some automations, builds, and offers that can be easily sold by beginners on cold traffic? Is it strictly stuff that brings new money or clients to the company? And is there something automation related rather than say cold email?

Cold email isn't really automation; you can easily build an AI‑enabled cold‑email agency, which is a top solo‑freelancer model right now. But the simplest, highest‑leveraged system you can build for a client is a 'speedtole' system—a glorified autoresponder. You watch a mailbox for incoming mail from a filter (e.g., Facebook lead ads sending an email), then using Make.com, n8n, or cloud routines you scan the mailbox, get the trigger, and immediately reply via email. Then you send a Twilio SMS, and a team member calls the prospect. This cuts response time from minutes to under a minute, boosting pickup and conversion rates because of the perceived professionalism of your system. I’ve seen this system add over a million dollars in revenue for clients and improve existing funnels by 10‑20%, easily generating an easy $500k per year.

Should I focus on getting clients first and learn skills later, or build skills and automations before acquiring clients? What to do while warming up cold emails?

To be fair, we cover all this in Maker School, but I'll still dangle the carrot. There are other lead generation mechanisms you can use while warming up emails. Upwork is big—apply the same approach I recommend there: record customized Loom videos and send them via cold DMs instead. Find creators, influencers, or people doing work you think you can help with, record a video solving their problem, and send it across their social media platforms. There's a lot you can do here, but I wouldn't just wait 2 to 4 weeks; you could send many customized DMs in that time, and many would likely respond.

When running a cold email campaign for a client, who should manage the inbox and replies—me or the client, especially with a big time zone difference?

Either way, my recommendation is to containerize your entire offer into an ongoing service where the client pays you a set amount and you return a booked‑meeting package. This is essentially lead generation, not just handing over an AI automation system. Clients often don’t know how to turn an opportunity into a lead or appreciate the value of leads, so they need you to build the system for them. You can take the cold‑email templates and systems you already use to acquire clients and duplicate them for the client—highly leveraged, scalable, and you can add AI‑based auto‑reply features. Containerizing means bundling all the steps (Apollo search, lead scraping, Google Drive upload, etc.) into a single service where the client only sees the money‑in, money‑out exchange and a multiple on their investment. Many agencies discover this approach organically; it’s worth systematizing.

Does your email outreach system work for business consultants? I'm thinking of starting a lead gen system for a business consultant.

Yes, absolutely. Business consultants are essentially what I'm doing right now—an AI and automation consultancy, which is everything to be honest; it's like a marketing business that you can frame as a consultancy. You could also frame an ads business as a consultancy, or pretty much anything. Consultancy is just a vague term people use to mean adding value to businesses. If you're B2B, you're likely a consultant. Some may challenge that, but I believe consultancies are like when I'm dealing with cloud‑based systems—the value delivered to a client is similar to that of a consultancy. Automation is a blend of consultancy, fractional ops, and software development. All of these lead gen systems work for that.
