How important is having a website for a client when you already have a domain and professional email for cold outreach?

Having a website is marginally important; it's like a business card. When I was door knocking, not having a business card made me seem unprepared, so I bought one for $50 and it helped. A website serves the same purpose: it signals legitimacy. The cost can range from $5 for a simple card site, $10 for another type, $50 for a Webflow site, or free with custom HTML. If you send cold emails and your domain leads to a 404, it looks like a scam and reduces trust. So a basic website helps perceive legitimacy, but it's not super valuable or important beyond that.

Is buying a domain early on beneficial for establishing brand identity?

Buying a domain alone won’t establish your brand. It only becomes valuable when you have a website on it and you drive traffic or rank in search. However, if you plan to run cold‑email campaigns, it’s a good idea to purchase a few domains and use one main domain as the sending address, with subdomains pointing back to your site. This avoids low‑value 404 signals and helps recipients trust the link.

What's the difference between your cold email system and a paid ads campaign with a full funnel in terms of ROI? Do you get better outcomes with cold email, and is that why you recommend it? What are the best outbound strategies to get clients based on your experience? Could you give an example with a $100/month budget?

I bootstrap the vast majority of my business using cold email, which is why I encourage everyone I know to use it. The cost per acquisition (CPA) with cold email is significantly lower than with paid ads—in 99% of cases it's not even funny how much lower it is. With cold email, you trade the inherent scalability and automation of ad platforms (like Google and Facebook's automated tweaking and tripwire offers) for the time you or a salesperson spend communicating one‑on‑one with prospects. Because you're investing that time, the CPA drops dramatically—for example, you might spend around $5 to acquire a $5,000 product, whereas with ads you could spend $350 or more for the same lifetime value. Even with a $100‑per‑month budget, you can't realistically run an ad campaign; the time, energy, and money required to set up and optimize the ads would be prohibitive. Cold email lets you use that budget effectively by focusing on direct outreach.

Is it worthwhile to email decision makers at small local businesses using the email addresses listed on their websites, or should I focus on a different niche?

Small businesses often have a generic info email that routes directly to the person in charge, though it may be filtered through junk folders. While this approach typically yields lower response rates compared to more targeted methods, it can still be viable, especially if it's the only data you have. Gathering email data is cheap and easy: you can search Google for relevant terms, scrape the resulting websites, and extract email addresses via simple HTTP requests. This can quickly generate thousands of contacts for just a few cents, making it a low‑barrier entry point despite the competition.
