#349 · should ai write your cold email icebreakers?

Should I write my email icebreakers with Claude Code or manually write them? I want to do it with volume, so I don't know how I'll manually research every lead and write personalizations for every one of them, but I'm worried if AI-written icebreakers actually work.

Icebreakers are like anything else. If your icebreakers are high quality and you have a process that consistently delivers results, and then you use AI to help reproduce that at scale, then you can make a lot of money with that. But if you're AI generating really shittily written icebreakers, the probability of this working is very, very low. So you just have to generate high-quality icebreakers. If they're high-quality, you're good.

What are your thoughts on the current state of lead acquisition automation, especially personalized mass emails? We're deciding which service to specialize in and would like any concepts worth exploring.

It’s a great time to build personalization flows because new entrants in cold email are higher than ever. Cold email had a big renaissance, AI personalization hit, and it still outperforms other marketing methods when run competently. Personalization boosts ROI, but you need to go beyond simple icebreaker lines—constrain the AI output, use your copywriting to write templated bits like “I love that you’re doing X. It’s refreshing to see that you’re doing that. Figured I’d reach out.” If you don’t constrain, AI‑generated icebreakers feel flamboyant and are seen as AI‑written, hurting perceived personalization. Instead, personalize the specific high‑ROI parts of the email (not the whole thing or just one line). Examples: paraphrase three interesting things from a prospect’s podcast, or pull key quotes from their content. You can run thousands of these personalized emails a day at a token cost (~$20/month). There’s massive untapped potential—cold email volume will soon far exceed what most people are doing.

How many leads can you call a big pool? I'm testing out three different offers for 500 each with my cold email right now. Should I hyper-personalize every single one or use more of a loose approach with an AI icebreaker?

Should you hyper-personalize every one of your 500 leads in cold email? Yes, you should. And you should use AI to help you do so. Hyper-personalize the first five or 10 yourself, and then just have AI pluck out the different patterns involved in your personalizations and try to replicate them. Then you'd be pretty good. Always try doing it yourself at least once — if you do it yourself at least once, then you'll have a good template and baseline for AI to work off of.

As an email designer targeting e-commerce stores, should I merge AI into my offering or focus on one path, especially considering joining Maker School as a CS student?

You should double down on what's already working and add a little AI to it. For example, in cold email, use AI to pull profile fields from LinkedIn, TikTok, or Twitter to generate a one‑line icebreaker that shows you’ve researched the prospect. The same approach works for inbound: when someone signs up via a form, use AI to take the form input, create a personalized icebreaker, and insert it into the welcome email. This tactic is easy to implement, underused, and will soon be built into platforms, so getting ahead can deliver a lot of value and is likely in high demand.

What are your favorite asset‑based cold outreach methods and which niches work best, and do they provide a better customer acquisition cost than standard cold‑email icebreakers?

Asset‑based cold outreach generally yields a lower customer acquisition cost than plain cold‑email icebreakers. One of my favorite methods is to create a set of high‑quality assets—like an AI‑generated 30‑email sequence—where AI first builds a massive email list, then generates an outline, drafts each email, selects the best versions, and compiles them into a ready‑to‑send campaign. Because the assets are produced at near‑zero marginal cost with AI, the overall CAC drops dramatically.
